"Expand Opportunities for Social Work Licensure" Package (SB 845-846, HB 4280)
Action Alert
Michigan social workers are essential to strengthening communities and expanding access to behavioral health care. A package of bills before the legislature would expand opportunities for social work licensure by reducing financial barriers, creating a practice-driven pathway to licensure, and extending limited license timelines.

Social workers and students are encouraged to contact their legislators to support policies that strengthen Michigan’s social work workforce.

Why This Matters

63.9% of Michigan clinical social work candidates failed the ASWB exam in 2023.

Financial barriers and exam requirements prevent qualified professionals from entering or staying in the field.

Expanding pathways to licensure can help address workforce shortages and improve access to care across Michigan.

What the Bill Package Does

Social Worker Scholarship Program (SB 846)
Provides scholarships (up to $1,000) to help repeat test-takers cover the cost of licensure exams, prep courses, and related expenses.

Practice-Driven Path to Licensure (SB 845)
Allows applicants who previously attempted but did not pass the exam to pursue licensure after completing 2,000 additional supervised post-degree hours.

Limited License Renewal Extension (HB 4280)
Extends the limited license period from 6 years to 10 years, allowing more time for social workers to complete supervision and licensure requirements.
