AI Companies are Seeking to Replace Mental Health Professionals - We Need You to Help Fight Back!
Right now in Nevada, AI chatbots are being marketed as clinical mental health providers, despite clear evidence that they can cause serious harm. In the U.S., a 14-year-old boy died by suicide after an AI chatbot reinforced his suicidal thoughts instead of helping him. In another case, Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, told a user to "please die." These are real-world failures of AI in mental health care.

As mental health professionals, we know that therapy requires human connection, ethical responsibility, and clinical judgment. AI cannot replace trained professionals. And yet, without action, AI chatbots will continue to be marketed as mental health care and unlicensed individuals will keep practicing therapy without oversight.

That’s why the National Association of Social Workers - Nevada Chapter has teamed up with Rep.  Jovan Jackson to push AB406. This bill:

  • Stops AI from being used as a therapist by banning AI from directly interacting with clients in a therapeutic interaction.
  • Allows AI to assist with administrative tasks—but only with proper safeguards and oversight of the clinical professional.

If we don’t take action, AI therapy will continue to spread, and the integrity of our profession will be at risk. Legislators need to hear from mental health professionals like you about why this bill matters.

Tell your Nevada legislators to SUPPORT AB406! Fill out the form to your right to send a message urging them to protect social work and mental health care in our state. When you are done share this with your colleagues, your Facebook or list-serv groups or anyone who this might affect. You do not have to be an NASW-Nevada member or even a social worker to send this action alert.
