As mental health professionals, we know that therapy requires human connection, ethical responsibility, and clinical judgment. AI cannot replace trained professionals. And yet, without action, AI chatbots will continue to be marketed as mental health care and unlicensed individuals will keep practicing therapy without oversight.
That’s why the National Association of Social Workers - Nevada Chapter has teamed up with Rep. Jovan Jackson to push AB406. This bill:
- Stops AI from being used as a therapist by banning AI from directly interacting with clients in a therapeutic interaction.
- Allows AI to assist with administrative tasks—but only with proper safeguards and oversight of the clinical professional.
If we don’t take action, AI therapy will continue to spread, and the integrity of our profession will be at risk. Legislators need to hear from mental health professionals like you about why this bill matters.
