As the Governor and Legislature work to reach agreement on a budget for FY 2025, the National Association of Social Workers – New York State Chapter, New York State Psychiatric Association, and Medical Society of the State of New York strongly urge funding to be included for the Veterans Mental Health Training Initiative (VMHTI). The NYS Budget has provided funding for the VMHTI since 2008. Prior funding has allowed the VMHTI to successfully train over 15,000 social workers and community mental health providers, including LMFTs, LMHCs, and licensed psychologists through the NASW-NYS program. Within the last year alone, NASW-NYS trained over 6,000 mental health providers.
It is imperative that community mental healthcare providers and primary care healthcare providers receive comprehensive training on military culture and the unique mental health challenges faced by veterans. By equipping these professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively support veterans, we can ensure that they receive the high-quality, culturally competent care they deserve.
Legislators in New York must prioritize the provision of wrap-around care for our veterans, recognizing the complex nature of their mental health needs. Funding the VMHTI is not just an investment in a program; it is a commitment to delivering holistic, comprehensive care to those who have served our country.
