Rep. Katko Introduces Loan Repayment Legislation

Rep. John Katko (R-NY-24), the main sponsor of our Medicare reimbursement bill, has introduced another piece of legislation that increases access to counselors and other mental health professionals. H.R. 6597, The Mental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Relief Act of 2018, provides loan repayment services to mental health counselors who agree to work in a mental health professional shortage area for six years.
 
Counselors are listed along with a number of other professions as eligible for the program. The bill’s primary Democratic sponsor is Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-CA-32) who, together with Rep. Katko, chairs the Congressional Mental Health Caucus. You can read the full text of the bill here.
