Ask Legislators to Support the 9-8-8 Implementation Act
Please ask your legislators to support the 9-8-8 Implementation Act of 2022 (H.R. 7116) that was recently introduced in Congress. This act will provide for the implementation of the new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (9-8-8) and will deliver much needed federal guidance and resources to enable states to establish their 9-8-8 systems and align crisis services ahead of the start date. The new three-digit number will go live on July 16, 2022 and will eventually replace the current lifeline number (1-800-273-TALK), offering  a more convenient, safe, and easy option for callers experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis.

The passage of H.R. 7116 would ensure that resources and support are available to build the infrastructure needed to bolster the capacity and coordination of the national crisis care system. The 9-8-8 system will enable anyone who is experiencing a mental or substance use crisis to be quickly connected to high quality care in their local community, but it will take a significant investment to implement the new system.  H.R. 7116 will meet this need by prioritizing resources to make sure anyone who dials 9-8-8 will receive swift and safe care.

As you know, the nation continues to face a monumental increase in mental health and substance use issues due to the  COVID-19 pandemic, and the demands for effective and timely treatment only continue to increase.

Please join us and ask your legislators to support (H.R. 7116) the 9-8-8 Implementation Act of 2022 to help the nation officially transition to the new three-digit dialing code to save lives.

Please share any response you receive from your congressional offices with govtaffairs@nbcc.org.
