Please advocate for increased access to mental health services by supporting the Counseling Compact.
The Counseling Compact will:
- expand the mobility of the counseling workforce
- enable counselors to serve clients who are increasingly engaged in multi-state employment and education
- facilitate efficient licensure processes for military-connected families
- ensure that proper regulatory processes necessary for the protection of the public are maintained and completed
The counseling compact is more important now than ever before! The global pandemic has dramatically expanded the need for telehealth services. Due to significant shifts in client mobility, including opportunities for remote work and education, cross-state movement and engagement has increased. This further highlights the need for counselors to have the privilege to practice in multiple states and Rhode Island's citizens will be well-served by enacting H.B. 8229.

The purpose and intent of this chapter is to facilitate interstate practice of licensed professional counselors with the goal of improving public access to professional counseling services. The practice of professional counseling occurs in the state where the client is located at the time of the counseling services. The compact preserves the regulatory authority of states to protect public health and safety through the current system of state licensure.
