Urge Your U.S. Senator to Support Saltwater Fisheries Regulation Reform
On July 10, 2017, U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Bill Nelson (D-Florida), Roy Blunt (R-Missouri.) and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) introduced S. 1520, "Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2017" (Modern Fish Act). As you know, recreational and commercial fishing are extremely different pursuits and should be managed differently. Yet, years of misguided federal policy have lumped the two together, resulting in damaging consequences for America's saltwater recreational anglers.
The Modern Fish Act addresses this problem by updating antiquated federal fisheries policies that were never designed to manage recreational fishing. The bill incorporates many priorities of the recreational fishing community including allowing alternative management for recreational fishing, reexamining fisheries allocations, rebuilding fishery stocks smartly, establishing exemptions for annual catch limits and improving recreational data collection.
This is the recreational boating and fishing community's opportunity to finally have a fisheries management system that will balance critical conservation objectives, angler satisfaction and the needs of the recreational fishing industry. The Modern Fish Act will provide a structure for more consistency in regulations, more access to the fisheries in federal waters and as a result, more conservation and economic benefits for the nation.
Please contact your Senator and urge them to cosponsor and support passage of S. 1520.
