Protect Kidney Patient Stability & Transplant Readiness in NY
As of January 1, New York Medicaid changed how certain oral phosphate-lowering therapies are covered for dialysis patients. These medications are medically necessary. They help control phosphorus levels, protect heart health, prevent bone complications, and maintain transplant eligibility.

Dialysis patients already face a heavy burden with multiple treatments per week, strict dietary limits, and ongoing medical appointments. Stability in medication access is critical for maintaining health and transplant readiness.

Physicians and patient advocates are concerned that the recent policy change could unintentionally:

  • Limit therapeutic flexibility
  • Disrupt continuity of care
  • Increase hospitalizations
  • Undermine transplant readiness

Now is the time to ensure the policy is working for patients and not creating unintended barriers. We urge Governor Hochul and Medicaid Director Amir Bassiri to:

  • Conduct a transparent clinical impact assessment
  • Publicly report on patient access and outcomes
  • Convene patients, caregivers, and nephrologists to review real-world effects

Kidney patient wellbeing depends on stability, continuity, and access to the right therapy at the right time.

📢 TAKE ACTION:
Send a message to New York state leaders urging them to review the policy’s impact and protect patient-centered kidney care. Your message will help ensure patient and physician voices are included in that review.

This advocacy effort is led by the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF).
