We are reaching out today with an urgent call to action.
The Alaska State Legislature has introduced HB 236, a bill that would restrict the sale of dietary supplements marketed for weight loss or muscle building. While framed as a public health measure, this bill dangerously blurs the line between drugs and dietary supplements and could set a precedent that spreads to other states.
Dietary supplements are already regulated under federal law through the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). This bill ignores that framework and instead treats supplements like pharmaceuticals, creating confusion for families, retailers, healthcare practitioners, and law enforcement alike.
If enacted, HB 236 could:
- Limit parental choice in managing their children’s health and wellness
- Restrict access to common products like protein powders, iron supplements, probiotics, and multivitamins
- Burden small businesses with costly compliance requirements
- Encourage a patchwork of conflicting state rules
- Push consumers toward unregulated online marketplaces
This bill will not solve the real public health issues it claims to address, but it will harm responsible businesses and families who rely on safe, legal supplements.
We need your voice.
Please take a moment to contact Alaska lawmakers and urge them to oppose HB 236 or amend it to clearly exempt dietary supplements regulated under federal law.
