Interference with Child Custody Awareness Day April 8, 2024 #itsnotacivilmatter
Family abduction, also known as custodial interference, is recognized as a crime in every state.  For a comprehensive summary of state criminal custodial interference laws, refer to a compilation of "Parental Kidnapping Statutes" located on the National District Attorneys Association website. Custodial Interference:

  • Deprives children of the right to love and be loved by their whole family.
  • Violates a court order.
  • Results in a negative psychological impact on children.
  • Is considered family violence.
  • Leads to alienating behaviors, which damages parent-child relationships.

In the Criminal Justice System’s Response to Parental Abduction, the Department of Justice describes Custodial Interference as “a serious maltreatment needing investigation AND prosecution”, explaining the need to “develop and implement policies for this crime.”  As it is “harmful to the well-being of children and their families,” it is time to stop the alarming rate of victims who are refused their right to justice.

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and April 8th is Interference with Child Custody Awareness Day. Throughout April, please recognize the harm done to children when denied a loving relationship with a parent. Please support legislative efforts by contacting your representatives to let them know that you support custodial interference enforcement to reduce family violence.
