Students of all ages, from kindergarten through high school, have been faced with historic challenges this year. Students have often struggled to stay engaged and learn. Academic trajectories slowed, with students in poverty, those with special needs or without stable housing or connectivity most likely to have lost ground. Now that school buildings across our state are re-opening, we can use this opportunity to gain momentum in closing the equity gap and help all students succeed.
SB 173, The Back on Track Act, proposes to use funds from the next federal pandemic stimulus to bolster summer school programs across the state with no costs to families. Districts would create plans which include essential services such as meals, transportation, and mental health supports to help ensure barriers are removed.
