NAR announces dues increase proposal, new strategic measures

Nevada REALTORS® President Heidi Kasama supports plan

The National Association of REALTORS® recently announced a proposed dues increase of $30. NAR's Board of Directors will vote on the issue at its May 19 meeting.

Nevada REALTORS 2018 President Heidi Kasama serves on NAR's Finance Committee and was an integral part of building the national association's budget.

"I have to tell you, we've got a very thorough process," Kasama said. "We as a finance committee and budget review committee go step by step through the process and look at all the programs. We approve what is good for the membership and the programs we're investing in. It's a very important vetting process that we go through. One of the things we looked at is a dues increase coming up in the next year. It's a very important thing and it's much needed."

At NAR's Budget Review Meeting last month, a budget was passed that included $35 million in new programming. These new measures are called the S.M.A.R.T. Initiatives -- Strategic Measures Advancing REALTORS® to Tomorrow. In an effort to showcase transparency, NAR is sharing the background that went into developing this budget, and why it believes the accompanying proposed dues increase is the best option to continue to serve NAR's 1.3 million members.

Over the next seven weeks, NAR is advocating for discussions with members as well as state and local association staff and volunteer leaders. NAR wants those groups to understand why this budget and these S.M.A.R.T. Initiatives are essential to position REALTORS® for success in an era of change and disruption.

"We are constantly evaluating our advocacy efforts," Kasama said. "If real estate is your profession, then politics is your business. We are here to advocate. We are here to educate our congressional leaders, and the local officials we elect, on the importance of real estate.

"We know real estate is the backbone of our country. Consider housing, construction and all the jobs and revenue created by real estate. We also want to make sure we're protecting our members and our business as well as the industry and consumers we serve. We must ensure the REALTOR® brand remains strong."
