New effort to address opioid addiction launches in Nevada

State leaders join together to combat growing crisis

A coalition of community leaders and organizations, health care stakeholders and business representatives announced the formation of the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative (RALI) of Nevada to address opioid misuse and addiction across the state.

One of RALI Nevada's first efforts will focus on common ways to safely dispose of unused medications, including using everyday household items or specialized drug disposal pouches. As a result of this initiative, RALI partners will have the opportunity to distribute 50,000 pouches to residents across the state. More than 655 Nevada residents died from drug overdoses in 2016 according to the Centers for Disease Control.

RALI Nevada comprises more than a dozen local, state and national organizations representing healthcare stakeholders, veterans, industry leaders, REALTORS® and others. For more information about RALI Nevada, please visit www.RALInv.org.

"We're proud to stand with this team of community partners in an effort that will undoubtedly save lives," said Heidi Kasama, president of the Nevada Realtors. "Safe disposal of unused medications is one example of how each of us can play a role in reducing the impact of this terrible crisis."

Leadership Academy wraps up second session of 2018
Nevada REALTORS® recently hosted Program #2 for its annual Leadership Academy at the state association's office in Reno. The Academy's 2018 class members got together July 17-18 for their second session of professional development, following their initial session in Scottsdale, AZ in February.

Program #2 was focused on its theme - "Speak Up and Lead!" Class members learned how to better communicate and share stories more effectively. A class trip to the Boys & Girls Clubs' of the Truckee Meadows Pennington Facility furthered a key goal of the Academy - REALTORS® giving back in their communities. The 15 members of the 2018 Academy's class also engaged in a powerful public speaking segment which centered around personal growth.

"Our Leadership Academy programs are always positive and productive," 2018 program Dean Tim Kuptz said. "The more time class members spend together and work together, the more they understand the program's goals and work to achieve them. This program is synonymous for helping REALTORS® become better leaders and become better people. Every year it's pretty cool to watch class members grow in the program."

Program #3 is scheduled for Oct. 3-5.

Almost 70% of millennials regret buying their homes

Millennials aren't exactly jumping for joy after purchasing their homes. About four in 10 millennials are already homeowners, according to a new survey of over 600 millennials (age 21-34) by Bank of the West. Yet it turns out that 68 percent of them are feeling buyer's remorse - almost double the amount of Baby Boomers who say they have regrets.

Roughly four in 10 millennials felt they made poor financial choices when it came to purchasing their home. Part of the problem seems to revolve around the down payment. The survey found one in three millennials dipped into their retirement accounts to pay for their homes - a trend Bailey calls "alarming." Read the complete story by clicking here.
