CALL TO ACTION: Bigger Better Bottle Bill Opposition
Lawmakers are pushing to expand New York’s Bottle Bill, but they’re ignoring serious problems that convenience stores like yours already face under the current system.

For 40 years, you've handled deposits and redemptions, but now many stores also serve fresh food, and unwashed, sticky bottles piling up near food prep areas are a growing health hazard. To make matters worse, third-party pickup of returned containers is inconsistent, with some collectors refusing to come unless you’ve stockpiled bags or full cartons.

The proposed changes would force you to accept even more containers, including ones that aren’t redeemable, without guaranteeing anyone will pick them up. That’s not fair, and it’s not safe.

Retailers need to speak up. NYACS is urging lawmakers to:

  • Fix the current system first—especially pickup delays and sanitation concerns.
  • Delay expansion until there are real solutions.
  • Include retailers in the process so future rules work in the real world.

Your voice matters. Help us protect your store and ensure the Bottle Bill works for everyone.
