NYSBA VOTER VOICE ALERT -- Tell Albany to Pass Lumber Sales Tax Exemption Now!

The Senate and Assembly have both introduced legislation that would exempt all New York State sales tax on lumber, timber, logs, pulpwood and posts.  It is vital that you contact your state legislator and encourage them to pass S. 6466/A.7431 immediately.

Skyrocketing lumber and material costs, have put New York State in a housing affordability crisis.  Home builders are currently facing astronomical increases in the cost of lumber and other materials.  Lumber prices have skyrocketed more than 180% since last spring.

This spike has caused the price of an average new single-family home to increase by more than $36,000 since April 2020 according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). This in turn has priced out many home buyers, particularly at the lower end of the market. A year ago, 45% of new home sales were priced below $300,000. In April 2021, only 27% of new home sales were priced below $300,000.  Most of this cost increase has been attributed to skyrocketing lumber prices.

Homebuyers need some form of relief from these increased costs and lack of affordable housing in New York State.  Passing S.6466/A.7431 may just be the short-term answer.  So please take a moment and ask your Senator and Assembly Member to take action on this bill today!
