House Bill 72 and Senate Bill 134 would prohibit state funding of intentional termination of human life at any stage and circumstance in Ohio. This first-of-its-kind legislation reinforces current law banning state funding for abortion, abolishes the death penalty, and expands protections against assisted suicide by linking these prohibitions together in Ohio Revised Code.
HB 72 and SB 134 uphold a consistent ethic of life. Fostering a culture of life throughout Ohio requires a commitment to recognizing the sanctity of the human person in all stages and circumstances, including the child in the womb, the infirm, and those who, at one time, blatantly disregarded the humanity of others and need to face justice. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that "the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person." It is time for Ohio to end this practice, reinforce laws to ban state funding for abortion, and strengthen protections against assisted suicide.
