February 1, 2021 by Tyler Smith
  • Star Grassroots Advocates
    • In January, the Government Relations team launched a grassroots advocacy campaign to welcome the freshman class of the 117th Congress. Thank you to the PA education advocates that have participated in this effort!
  • Advancing PAEA’s Advocacy Agenda
    • On January 26, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) reintroduced the Strengthening America’s Health Care Readiness Act. If passed, the bill would provide $5 billion for new National Health Service Corps scholarships and loan repayment awards with a 40% carve-out for underrepresented minority students and clinicians.
    • PAEA disseminated welcome letters to the freshmen members of the 117th Congress throughout January. In the letters, PAEA highlighted key policy priorities for PA programs, faculty, and students and expressed the Association’s desire to collaborate with freshman legislators to meet the nation’s workforce needs.
  • Health Care News in Washington
    • Following the election of Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Raphael Warnock (D-GA) on January 5, Democrats won control of the Senate and will exercise control of key health care committees of jurisdiction during the 117th Congress.
    • In late January, President Biden signed an executive order establishing a new special enrollment period for individual health coverage from February 15 to May 15 and directing agencies to address existing policies with the effect of increasing the cost of health coverage.
  • Opportunities for Action
    • Throughout 2021, PAEA will be urging legislators to take bold action to address the health and education crises resulting from COVID-19. If you have not already contacted your representatives through this campaign, please do so today.
