Washington Update - February 2024
February 5, 2024 by Tyler Smith
  • Star Grassroots Advocates
    • PAEA’s Government Relations team would like to thank all grassroots advocates that participated in action alert campaigns on the National Health Service Corps and FY24 appropriations in January. These efforts resulted in hundreds of messages delivered to Capitol Hill on behalf of PA education. Thank you for your leadership!
  • Advancing PAEA’s Advocacy Agenda
    • On January 29, PAEA joined with the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition to urge Appropriations Committee leaders to provide increased investments in HRSA’s Title VII health workforce programs in final fiscal year 2024 appropriations legislation.
    • On January 31, PAEA released a statement for the record for the House Education and Workforce Committee’s markup of the College Cost Reduction Act. In the statement, PAEA strongly opposed the bill’s proposed elimination of the Grad PLUS loan program while praising its reversal of recent third-party servicer guidance proposed by the Department of Education.
  • Health Care News in Washington
    • On January 19, President Biden signed the Further Additional Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act, extending funding for the Department of Health and Human Services and the mandatory authorization for the National Health Service Corps through March 8.
    • In late January, the House Energy and Commerce committee held a legislative hearing examining factors driving increased health care spending in the United States.
  • Opportunities for Action
    • Following the enactment of short-term continuing resolutions, Congress has just a few weeks left to finalize appropriations bills for fiscal year 2024. If you have not yet contacted your elected representatives, please urge Congress to support increased funding for all Title VII health workforce development programs for FY24 today.
