Hi Michael in Washington, DC!
Ask Congress to Prohibit an Unauthorized War with Iran
The targeted assassination of a top Iranian military commander is a dangerous escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran.  After withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Deal in May of 2018, the Trump administration took several steps that increased tension in the region. The National Security advisor directed the Pentagon to develop military options for attacking Iran, and the administration imposed numerous economic santions.  These sanctions have had a serious economic impact in Iran.

Now, as a result of the targeted assassination, Iran has announced it will no longer abide by the Iran Nuclear Deal.  Additional military action by the United States will only lead to more deaths and increase conflict and instability in the Middle East. We must keep in mind the 82 million people of Iran who have little control over international disagreements, as well as the US Servicemembers who would be put at risk if we engage in yet another conflict.
War with Iran is not the answer.  Diplomacy and international cooperation are the only paths to lasting security.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) has at several points in recent years lifted up the value of reduced tensions and open dialogue with Iran. The most recent General Assembly affirmed the value of respectful understanding and reducing tensions with the government and 82 million people of Iran.  As members of a community of nations, we must work to reduce tension and avoid conflict, rather than continuing down the path to yet another war in the Middle East.  Last Friday, the PCUSA joined with other denominations and faith-based organizations in a statement calling for an end to the rush to war.  The statement noted, “Our faith communities see the futility of war, and its power to dehumanize. We know that human flourishing entails breaking cycles of violence, being courageous peacemakers, and focusing on the root causes of conflict. Violent conflict is a path of mutual destruction.”
Call your members of congress today and tell them to vote for legislation to prevent the President from launching an unauthorized war against Iran.  Congress must pass legislation to end unauthorized strikes against Iran!
