Support Causes Important to You
April 18, 2025 by Lisa Elijah

Many people underestimate the influence they can have on public policy. There is a common belief that only lobbyists or powerful interest groups can shape legislation, but that is untrue. Lawmakers rely heavily on the feedback they receive from their constituents to inform their decisions. Congressional offices track letters, phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings. A flood of messages on a particular issue can elevate its importance in the eyes of a legislator.

In many cases, the volume and passion of grassroots responses have been the deciding factor in whether a bill is supported, amended, or opposed. Direct communication with elected officials is not just encouraged; it is essential. Recently, a Senator took to the Senate floor to speak on a number of issues. One of the key things he did while speaking was to read letters from his constituents. A very overlooked, but important tool. We plan to use our collective voice to tell Congress to continue to support the Department of Veterans Affairs' Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders (SCI/D) system of care. Come June, we are bringing advocates to DC to speak with their Senators and Representatives and share the number of people from their states and districts who want the SCI/D system protected. Thank you to all our advocates who have signed, both returning and new. And if you have not already done so, there is still time. Click here to sign our petition to protect the SCI/D system of care. If you have already signed the petition, please share it with someone!

While you are there, review our growing list of campaigns and write to your legislators to let them know the issues that are important to you on PVAction Force.

And for advocates who would like to share their personal stories and why an issue is of special importance to them, watch our Advocacy Storytelling webinar. We have included a guided worksheet to help bring your story to life.
