Many caregivers are forced to reduce their work hours, take unpaid leave, or leave the workforce entirely to provide care. Caregivers sacrifice wages, retirement savings, and financial stability to care for those they love. A healthcare worker performing the same task would result in billions of dollars in healthcare costs.
The Credit for Caring Act (H.R. 2036/S. 925) seeks to change the burden placed on family caregivers by providing a federal tax credit of up to $5,000 to those who are eligible. This credit would help offset out-of-pocket caregiving expenses such as home modifications, respite care, or transportation costs and recognize the economic value of unpaid caregiving.
PVA Position:
Congress must pass the Credit for Caring Act (H.R. 2036/S. 925). Many of our members rely on family caregivers to assist them with daily activities, and we recognize the immense financial burden this places on caregivers, particularly those caring for veterans with disabilities. This legislation would ensure that caregiving is supported and recognized as the essential, often life-altering, work it truly is.
