Urge Your Members of Congress to Support the Affordability is Access Act
Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Ayanna Pressley have introduced the Affordability is Access Act, a bill requiring insurance companies to cover all birth control methods that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be sold over-the-counter (OTC). This includes birth control methods like the internal and external condoms, sponges, spermicide, and hopefully the first OTC birth control pill! An FDA expert Advisory Committee recently voted unanimously to recommend approval of a birth control pill to be sold OTC. If the FDA follows the Advisory Committee's recommendation for approval, this would be the first OTC birth control pill in the U.S., meaning we'd finally join the more than 100 countries around the world that don't have this unnecessary prescription barrier to a pill.

But for this to help as many people as possible, birth control that's available OTC must be covered by insurance without the requirement of a prescription. That's why we need the Affordability is Access Act--so that everyone who wants to use OTC birth control methods has the coverage they need to affordably access them.

Right now, we are facing a national crisis in access to reproductive health care. To make matters worse, more than 19 million women who are eligible for publicly funded contraception live in contraceptive deserts, meaning they lack reasonable access in their county to a health center that offers the full range of contraceptive methods. On the other hand, nearly 90% of people in the U.S. live within 5 miles of a community pharmacy where they could potentially access OTC methods. Please help make this a reality by urging your members of Congress to support the Affordability is Access Act today!
