How much money a person has and where they live should not determine their ability to access abortion care.
Yet, 33 states and the District of Columbia do not cover abortion within their state Medicaid programs, except with limited exceptions. And more than seven million women of reproductive age live in states that do not provide coverage for abortion with state funds. This means that more than half of those who lack coverage for abortion care in Medicaid are women of color.
Additionally, 26 states have enacted restrictions that interfere with abortion as a covered health service in health plans offered in health insurance marketplaces.
The Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act (EACH) Act would change this. The EACH Act:
- Eliminates bans on public insurance coverage of abortion care and guarantees insurance coverage of abortion for every person; and
- Protects against federal interference with private health insurance companies that choose to offer coverage for abortion care.
