Why action is needed now:
Congress is moving quickly to pass a budget reconciliation package that could significantly dismantle the Medicaid program that will lead to loss of coverage to millions of beneficiaries. As people lose access to coverage, care will be delayed, and access to vital services will be restricted. This will disproportionately affect patients in rural areas.
Lending our collective voice:
Guided by our Mission to serve the poor and vulnerable, Providence believes that health care is a human right. Providence is proud to serve more than 1.1 million Medicaid patients across Providence’s seven state footprint every year.
Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that, together with the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), provides coverage to nearly 79 million Americans, including nearly half of all children. It is the single largest source of health coverage in the U.S. Of the total enrolled,18.6 million have Medicaid coverage thanks to the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion. Medicaid is part of the essential safety net which serves the most vulnerable Americans.
Medicaid provides vital coverage for:
- Pregnant women
- Children and newborns
- Seniors, especially those in nursing homes
- People with disabilities
- Low-income individuals
