However, on May 8, 2025, President Donald Trump announced his intention to cancel the program via a Truth Social post, erroneously labeling the program “racist and illegal.” His administration quickly followed this announcement by unlawfully terminating grants under the program, freezing the remaining funds, and declaring the statute itself unconstitutional. Though litigation to restore the program is now underway, the program faces a new threat: In April 2026, the Trump administration submitted an FY 2027 budget proposal to Congress that would eliminate the program’s funding completely.
We need Congress to act now. The unlawful cancellation of these funds risks widening the digital divide, placing our country’s most vulnerable communities at risk. Congress must reinstitute Digital Equity Act funding, instate protections against future attempts to cancel funding via the appropriations process, and oppose future Digital Equity Act funding rescissions by way of any coming budget reconciliation measures or appropriations bills. Join us in urging lawmakers to take action to continue the fight in making digital inclusion a reality for everyone.
