SIGN THE PETITION urging Hoosier leaders to prevent unnecessary hikes in electricity rates!

Add your name to the growing list of Hoosiers demanding state lawmakers and the next Governor of Indiana work with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to oppose Indiana utilities' plans to increase electricity rates. Not too long ago, Indiana residents enjoyed some of the lowest electricity prices in the country, but now find themselves burdened with the 32nd highest rates. This drastic increase is simply unacceptable. By signing your name, you are showing your support for opposing these rate hikes and advocating for fair and reasonable pricing for all Indiana residents.

Petition Text

As an elected official, we urge you to work with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to put an end to the unjustified rate hikes by Indiana utilities.

Recently, Indiana’s electric rates have dramatically increased and now rank 32nd highest in the nation! Not long ago, Hoosiers paid the fifth-lowest electric rates. This increase results from a significant shift in our state's power sources. Utilities are shutting down our baseload power source, clean coal, and replacing it with imported natural gas and intermittent power sources like wind and solar. This transition is a key factor in rate increases.

Since December 2023, three of the state's largest utilities have requested rate increases. As per their plans, coal-powered plants will be converted to natural gas plants, only to serve as a temporary solution until renewable energy is fully implemented. Due to these changes, the additional costs must be passed onto the ratepayers.

- AES has submitted a request to IURC seeking a 13% increase.

- CenterPoint has submitted a request to IURC seeking a 16.5% increase.

- Duke Energy has submitted a request to IURC seeking a 16% increase.

Suppose utilities try to justify their rate increase proposals by claiming that following the green energy transition is necessary. Why switch from one fossil fuel to another, only to shut it down in the near future? This kind of practice ultimately harms Hoosier ratepayers because rates inevitably increase. Due to these constant price increases, many Hoosiers struggle to pay their monthly utility bills. This is causing the state to lose its economic advantage compared to other states and nations that offer cheaper energy prices.

We must address this issue before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approves any additional utility rate increases as our state's economic future depends on it.
