ACT TODAY: City Council Bill Would End Criminal Background Checks
The New York City Council is seriously considering the passage of a bill, Intro. 2047 by Council Member Stephen Levin, which would prohibit owners and managers from performing criminal background checks in rentals, leases, subleases, or occupancy agreements in New York City. Building owners and real estate brokers would be prohibited from inquiring about criminal record information at any stage in the process. The consequences of such legislation will have a serious negative impact on rental properties and on the tenants who already live in your building(s).

The Council is preparing to hold a hearing on this legislation within the next few weeks and then could pass the bill soon after. It is absolutely crucial that not only you, but your tenants, reach out to your City Council Member and voice strong opposition against this proposed bill. Currently, the following Council Members have signed on as sponsors of this bill: Brad S. Lander, Keith Powers, Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., Carlina Rivera , Carlos Menchaca, Vanessa L. Gibson, Ben Kallos, Mark Levine, Adrienne E. Adams, Helen K. Rosenthal, Alicka Ampry-Samuel , Farah N. Louis, Daniel Dromm, Margaret S. Chin, Diana Ayala, James G. Van Bramer, Antonio Reynoso, Paul A. Vallone, Deborah L. Rose, Laurie A. Cumbo, Ydanis A. Rodriguez, Karen Koslowitz, Darma V. Diaz, Oswald Feliz, and Kevin C. Riley.

It's important to send messages directly to these Council Members to voice your opposition, as well as all Council Members. By typing in your address, your local Council Member is automatically determined and you will be able to send a direct message to them and Council Speaker Corey Johnson. It is also important that you share the link to this VoterVoice campaign with your tenants so that they can message these Council Members as well. Similar to how building owners can send messages, all your tenants have to do is type in their address and the local Council Member will be determined.

We encourage you to act quickly and help RSA fight against this proposed legislation.
