Ensure that People with Disabilities are Part of the Build Back Better Agenda
The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged the disability community. On the economic front, more than 1 million workers with disabilities have lost their jobs. In fact, the labor force participation rate for working-age people with disabilities has dropped to 33.2 percent as of December 2020. Americans with disabilities want to get back to work, earn an income and become independent, just like anyone else.

Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to more issues and concerns for all students and their families, but this is especially true for students with disabilities.

Lastly, with the intersectionality of experience and identity between the disability community and other minority groups, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of thousands of our people.

With the new Administration being sworn in, discussions now focus on increasing vaccination and economic recovery. While many campaign promises have been made, there are still serious concerns about when people with disabilities will have access to the vaccine or whether we will have a place in the recovering economy.

As such, elected officials need to remember people with disabilities as they get to work rebuilding the nation in the months ahead.
