Senators Roger Marshall, MD (R-KS), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and John Thune (R-SD) have introduced Senate, S. 3018, that mirrors H.R. 3173, the "Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act of 2021". While prior authorization can play a role in controlling the cost of care, when misused, often leads to delays in and results in administrative burdens for physicians. This takes precious time away from patient care and potentially leads to delays of needed medical intervention. This bipartisan legislation would improve the prior authorization process in Medicare Advantage (MA) by establishing an electronic prior authorization program and instituting common-sense transparency and accountability about items and services subject to prior authorization.
