Enhanced premium tax credits that have helped thousands of South Carolinians obtain affordable healthcare through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace since 2021 will be expiring at the end of 2025, greatly raising the costs of healthcare insurance in 2026. Congress did not extend the enhanced ACA premium tax credits through H.R.1 earlier this summer or through the recent shutdown, but still has time to do so before plans go into effect for 2026.
Without these credits, monthly premiums will skyrocket, becoming unaffordable for most South Carolinians currently in the healthcare marketplace. Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that a 40-year-old making $31,000 in SC with a Silver Plan will see increases of $95 a month on average - an additional $1,140 a year. With the costs of premiums being too high to afford, it is estimated that over 170,000 South Carolinians will be without access to affordable insurance if the credits are not extended.
Please urge Congress to extend the premium tax credits for 2026 and ensure healthcare coverage for thousands of South Carolinians.
