Parental Rights are Paramount, Remove Domangue’s Amendment
On Wednesday, April 3rd, the House voted by a slim margin to fundamentally change a core ethic of parental rights outlined in the Louisiana Children’s Code by stripping parents of the right to determine appropriate preventative healthcare interventions for their children. The vote came on an amendment introduced by Rep Jessica Domangue on HB47, a bill introduced by Rep Kathy Edmonston which simply provides that schools inform parents of the state’s exemption law.

The amendment by Rep Domangue requires that a written dissent to vaccination requirements for school attendance be accompanied by "written verification that the child has been examined by a physician."

In direct opposition to the Louisiana Children's Code, which states that, “The people of Louisiana recognize. . .that parents should make the decisions regarding where and with whom the child shall reside, the educational, moral, ethical, and religious training of the child, the medical, psychiatric, surgical, and preventive health care of the child,” Rep Domangue has indicated that parents are not capable of this fundamental decision-making for their children.

In her statement on the House floor, Rep Domangue insulted parents and parental rights by insinuating that NOT vaccinating could be a sign of medical neglect and is a matter of convenience rather than a matter of conscience.

This amendment does not reflect conservative values and is a direct attack on parental rights.

Please ask your state legislators to remove Domangue’s amendment from HB47 and ensure that parents, not the state of Louisiana, remain in control of their child’s medical decisions.
