Urge Congress to Support Economic Aid for Specialty Crop Growers
Congress is currently considering new farm aid that could expand support for specialty crops. Decisions made now will determine whether growers, including ornamental horticulture businesses, are included in upcoming economic assistance. These decisions affect the entire green industry, from wholesalers, suppliers and retailers to landscapers and irrigators — because a strong supply chain depends on healthy growers.

The Problem

Recent weather events and ongoing economic pressures have highlighted the need for targeted relief. Without action, specialty crop growers risk being left out of federal assistance that is critical to stabilizing production, protecting jobs, and ensuring continued availability of plants and materials across the green industry.

Specialty crops generate more than $75 billion annually and represent over one-third of all U.S. crop sales, supporting rural economies nationwide. Yet growers are under intense pressure from rising production costs, shifting demand, lost markets, repeated natural disasters, and growing competition from imports. Increasing costs for labor, fuel, fertilizer, and crop protection products, combined with weather-related losses, are making it harder for many specialty crop operations to remain sustainable. Targeted economic relief helps growers stay resilient, protect jobs, and continue supplying the plants and products the green industry depends on.
