Continuing their food safety leadership, legislators in California have introduced AB1264, a bill that would be the first in the nation to create a statutory definition of Ultra-Processed Foods and would phase ‘particularly harmful’ UPF out of California public school meals by 2032. This bills, along with legislation pending in more than 20 other states, mark a huge step forward in protecting the health of American citizens from toxic chemicals in our food supply.
It has become abundantly clear over the last six decades, even as the relevant science has become irrefutable, that we cannot rely on the FDA, Congress, or the food companies to act in the best interest of our health. The issue of food safety is gaining national attention and HHS Secretary Kennedy has vowed to make it a priority, but we must continue to apply pressure. Collectively, we can force national systemic change by inspiring action at the state level.
