More than 250 storms have caused power outages in the past 5 years, leading to dangerous conditions and reliance on costly, polluting generators. Solar power can be a solution, providing Pennsylvanians with uninterrupted access to cleaner, cheaper power. But right now, it is illegal or impossible for millions of Pennsylvanians to take advantage of solar technology; for example, if you don't own your home, if your roof faces the shade, or if your roof is not fit for panels.
Pennsylvania also has a significant need to expand and diversify its energy production. At the same time as state energy usage is expected to triple over the next decade, Pennsylvania ranks 40th in the nation for renewable energy growth over the last decade. Only 4% of PA energy is renewable, even though 65% of residents support statewide solar access. Solar energy is a clean, reliable, and affordable option to keep Pennsylvanians protected from unreliable grids and high utility bills.
H.B. 504 would authorize community solar statewide, as well as institute prevailing wage standards for community energy workers and consumer protections for community energy subscribers. With this bipartisan bill, we can improve Pennsylvania's energy supply and resiliency, lower utility bills, and reduce our impact on climate change.
Our sacred texts teach us that human beings are tasked with being stewards of our world, partners in creation with a responsibility “to work it and to protect it” (Gen. 2:15). We have a sacred responsibility to care for the Earth and by advancing community solar we are helping to create a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.
Join us in fighting for healthy communities and a healthy planet. During this critical budget negotiation season, urge your State Senators to support H.B. 504, the Community Energy bill.
