Our current goal to reduce emissions by 40 percent by 2030 is not enough. It lags behind what science tells us is necessary, and it lags behind global leaders, like Denmark and the EU. With billions of dollars of state and federal dollars, now is the time to raise our ambitions.
The time is now to invest in the future of our communities, our state, and our planet. Tell our state leaders we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions sooner and faster.
Background
SB 12, introduced by Senator Henry Stern, would require the state to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, moving beyond the state’s current goal of 40 percent.
By achieving this target and beyond, not only would we make a critical change to save the future of our planet, but we would also create hundreds of thousands of jobs, prevent over 2,000 premature deaths per year, and boost our state GDP, according to the Climate Center’s analysis.
Jewish Values
Jewish teachings emphasize our responsibility to protect Creation and ensure a livable planet for future generations. In the Garden of Eden, God instructs Adam and Eve: “Take care not to spoil or destroy My world, for if you do, there will be no one to repair it after you” (Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:13). We must reduce emissions to protect the planet for our children and grandchildren.
