The Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee has announced that on Wednesday, August 5, they will consider several kids’ online safety bills, which will include the Kids Online Safety Act (S.1748). As written, the Senate’s version of this legislation specifically includes a “duty of care”: a legal duty requiring developers to exercise reasonable care to prevent and mitigate harms to minors. In June, the House of Representatives passed a legislative package that explicitly rejected this important provision.  

Each child is created in the image and likeness of God, deserving of love, protection, and the freedom to grow in a healthy and secure environment.” Children should not be treated merely as data points or revenue sources, but as vulnerable human beings with real needs and rights.

Tell your senator: any final senate bipartisan agreement on KOSA must include the duty of care standard. Kids need more than voluntary policies and vague promises. They need real accountability that requires platforms to build safety into the design and operation of their products.
