In March 2025, Sen. Timothy Moffitt introduced Senate Bill 415, Patient Safety/Med. Imaging/Radiation Therapy, in North Carolina. SB 415 creates licensure requirements for all individuals who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures in North Carolina. ASRT has displayed long-standing, unwavering support for legislation requiring licensure for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals. Although the current North Carolina bill is a positive step in that direction, ASRT believes the draft legislation would benefit from changes that align with nationally recognized practice standards. According to the ASRT Practice Standards for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, the Cardiovascular Credentialing International registered cardiovascular invasive specialist credential is a postprimary credential earned after an individual holds the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists primary radiography credential. The ARRT radiography credential is a critical precursor to ensure patients receive quality, safe care. For more information on the role of medical imaging professionals, visit asrt.org/BeSeen.
