For over a decade, MAZON has made it a priority to understand and address the unique challenges of military families who struggle with food insecurity. It’s unacceptable that tens of thousands of service members are shut out of accessing SNAP and other food assistance programs, and must quietly turn for help to food pantries that exist on or near almost every military base in the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow’s Farm Bill outline addresses this injustice, and Congress must prioritize this issue in the Farm Bill reauthorization process.

MAZON’s comprehensive report “Hunger in the Military: Food Insecurity Among Military Families in the U.S.” documents the unique food security challenges facing military families and outlines several recommendations for long-term, systemic solutions. While we have seen some recent progress with the Department of Defense finally acknowledging the problem, we have more work ahead. Congress must act.
