S. 828/H.R. 432, the Mental Health Access Improvement Act, has been introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) are the lead sponsors in the Senate and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA-5) and Rep. John Katko (R-NY-24) are the lead sponsors in the House. Last Congress, this bill had the most cosponsors it has ever had and was reported favorably out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. We are hoping to continue that momentum this Congress!
Medicare coverage of mental health counselors has been a top legislative priority of NBCC's Government and Legislative Affairs Department for years. Providing Medicare recognition to mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists will increase the public's access to addiction and mental health services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This legislation would also be a major step toward gaining parity with other mental health professions. We urge you to contact your Senators and Representatives immediately and request that they cosponsor S. 828/H.R 432.
The more contacts with legislators that we can generate, the greater likelihood we can finally get this bill passed. Use the tools below to call, email, and contact your legislators on social media.
