Abandoned mines are a problem – a big problem.
But with a little help from Congress, they are a problem we can tackle, creating jobs, cleaner water and healthier fisheries in the process.
Good Samaritan legislation would allow groups like TU, state agencies, and partners to clean up abandoned hardrock mines without taking on environmental liability for pollution we had no hand in creating.
Tens of thousands abandoned hardrock mines are polluting the environment and TU's restoration specialists have the know-how and experience to improve water quality at these sites. We are eager to take on acid-draining abandoned mines, but first we need targeted liability protections for bona fide Good Samaritans.
Without this legislation abandoned mines that could otherwise be cleaned up will go on polluting our waters and communities.
You can help by contacting your members of Congress and urging them to support Good Samaritan legislation.
