What is SNAP?
SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP is a federal program that helps millions of Americans who are struggling financially purchase healthy, nutritious food. It is the largest program working to fight hunger in America.
Why is SNAP important?
SNAP provides families with their basic nutritional needs to get them through temporary hard times. SNAP is absolutely critical to making sure no one in America goes hungry. SNAP also has many economic benefits. In 2018, SNAP lifted over 3 million Americans above the poverty line. In addition, for every additional SNAP dollar provided during an economic downturn, $1.50 in spending is added into the economy. This helps to infuse dollars locally and jumpstart our economy.
Why does SNAP need my support?
We know that SNAP is a reliable and effective program that helps families who are struggling with food access. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic many families are struggling right now. 211 call centers across New York State have seen an almost 400% increase in the number of calls looking for food assistance this year compared to the same time period last year. If Congress temporarily increases the amount of SNAP benefits a family receives between now and the end of the COVID-19 pandemic by 15%, we can work to make sure that no one in our community goes hungry.
How can I help?
Use the tool to the right to send an email to your members of Congress OR tweet at them! While UWBEC is regularly talking with our elected officials, there is strength in numbers. They will notice when a number of constituents reach out to them about an issue. Feel free to share a personal experience or story about your experience with SNAP. Messages with a personal note are more likely to get noticed!
