National Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities - Sept. 9
In light of recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has invited all dioceses across the country to unite in a Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities. He has also appointed a special task force to support bishops in marking that Day of Prayer, and more broadly, in promoting peace and healing during this time of great strain on civil society. The Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities will be celebrated on the feast of St. Peter Claver, September 9.

"I have stressed the need to look toward additional ways of nurturing an open, honest and civil dialogue on issues of race relations, restorative justice, mental health, economic opportunity, and addressing the question of pervasive gun violence," Archbishop Kurtz said. "The Day of Prayer and special Task Force will help us advance in that direction.  By stepping forward to embrace the suffering, through unified, concrete action animated by the love of Christ, we hope to nurture peace and build bridges of communication and mutual aid in our own communities."

The purpose of the Task Force is to help bishops engage the challenging problems directly, by various means: gathering and disseminating supportive resources and "best practices"; actively listening to the concerns of members in troubled communities as well as law enforcement; and building strong relationships to help prevent and resolve conflicts. Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta, former USCCB president, will chair the task force.

Mother Teresa: Model to Us All

Together with the entire Church, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) celebrates the canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Hearing the voice of God while traveling from Calcutta to Darjeerling, Mother Teresa was moved to reach out to Calcutta's poorest citizens. Her ministry blossomed into the formation of the Missionaries of Charity who operate today in countries around the world.

Mother Teresa's tireless efforts on behalf of God's most vulnerable children made her the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and an example for millions worldwide devoted to the struggle for human life and dignity. On September 4, 2016, Blessed Mother Teresa becomes Saint Teresa of Calcutta, as the Church celebrates her profound legacy and declares with joy her sainthood before the world. CRS has prepared a number of resources (a special handout, prayer, videos) to help parishes and schools to learn about and celebrate her witness of faith: click here.

  How to Deal with Others
Excerpt from:  Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel, no. 271) - "It is true that in our dealings with the world, we are told to give reasons for our hope, but not as an enemy who critiques and condemns. We are told quite clearly: 'do so with gentleness and reverence' (1 Pet 3:15) and 'if possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all' (Rom 12:18). We are also told to overcome 'evil with good' (Rom 12:21) and to 'work for the good of all' (Gal 6:10). Far from trying to appear better than others, we should 'in humility count others better' than ourselves (Phil 2:3). The Lord's apostles themselves enjoyed 'favor with all the people' (Acts 2:47; 4:21, 33; 5:13). Clearly Jesus does not want us to be grandees who look down upon others, but men and women of the people. This is not an idea of the Pope, or one pastoral option among others; they are injunctions contained in the word of God which are so clear, direct and convincing that they need no interpretations which might diminish their power to challenge us. Let us live them sine glossa, without commentaries. By so doing we will know the missionary joy of sharing life with God's faithful people as we strive to light a fire in the heart of the world."
