Supporting the goals and ideals of October as "National Domestic Violence Awareness Month"
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, ‘‘domestic violence’’ is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, or other abusive behaviors as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. Intimate partner violence affects people of all ages, races, ethnicities, genders and economic and religious backgrounds. In the United States, an average of 24 people per minute become victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, amounting to more than 12,000,000 women and men over the course of a single year. In 2024, the National Domestic Violence Hotline answered more than 430,000 calls, chats, and texts about services. Women are disproportionately the victims of domestic violence, as approximately 1 in 2 women will experience intimate partner violence or stalking during their lifetimes, compared to 2 in 5 men.

The bipartisan Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resolution recognizes the urgent need for national action, expanded support services, and increased awareness for survivors and families affected by domestic violence. The resolution highlights the millions of Americans affected each year, acknowledges the disproportionate impact on women and marginalized communities, and calls attention to the serious physical, emotional, and economic consequences for survivors and families. Through this resolution, Congressman Al Green (D-TX), along with 141 of his colleagues, calls on Congress to support programs that work to end domestic violence and protect both female and male victims.

Congressman Green stated on October 31, 2025, “Domestic violence is a national crisis; we cannot force survivors to suffer in silence or permit the systems meant to protect them to falter. As a nation, we have both a moral and constitutional duty to ensure every person’s right to safety, dignity, and justice. By recognizing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are taking a stand to strengthen federal protections, expand survivor resources, and hold abusers accountable. America must lead with compassion, legislate with conviction, and act with courage to end domestic violence.”
