Ensure women have equal rights under the law
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was passed by Congress in 1972; however, it has never been fully ratified. Its ratification would provide a constitutional guarantee that all men and women are truly equal under the law and that these rights cannot be easily abridged. Without the ERA, women do not have equal rights under the law.

The Equal Rights Amendment will make it clear that sex discrimination in employment, education or any other space is a violation of women’s constitutional rights as Americans. It will also provide a clearer and stricter judicial standard for deciding cases of sex discrimination.

In March 2021, the House of Representatives voted to remove the time limit on the ERA. The next step is for the Senate to pass S.J. Res. 1 to remove the deadline to ratify the ERA, introduced by Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Use our pre-drafted letter to contact your senators urging them to pass S.J. Res. 1. If your senator supports the ERA, please ask them to reach out to Senate Leader Majority Charles Schumer and request a vote on the bill.

We also invite you to call Schumer's office and urge him to bring S.J. Res. 1 to a vote. Dial 202-224-6542 (if you are on a mobile device, just click on the number to dial automatically). We have included some tips and sample scripts below.

Tips before you make your call

  • If you're not sure what to say, follow one of our scripts.
  • Keep in mind that the staff on the line want to be helpful.
  • They will probably ask for your name and state of residence. We are calling Senator Schumer from across the country because as the Majority Leader, he sets the schedule for the entire Senate.
  • Be patient. If you don't get a voicemail or a person, keep trying until you do.
  • If you are calling outside business hours or no one is answering, and you get an answering service, leave a message with your ask.
  • Always be respectful.

Script 1

Hello! My name is (your first and last name), and I am calling from (your city/town and state) to urge Leader Schumer to support a Senate floor vote on SJ. Res. 1, the legislation to remove the time limit from the Equal Rights Amendment. The Senate must take action on the ERA immediately.

The resolution is cosponsored by more than the majority of the U.S. Senate, including the Democratic Caucus and Senators Murkowski and Collins. It is past time to move forward with a vote.

Thank you for your time.

Script 2

Hello! My name is (your first and last name), and I am calling from (your city/town and state) to urge Leader Schumer to bring SJ. Res. 1, the legislation to remove the time limit from the Equal Rights Amendment, to the Senate floor for a vote before the midterm elections.

The Senate has the chance to bring the country’s foundational governing document into the 21st century and the public deserves to know where their Senators stand on the important issue of gender equity.

Thank you for your time.
