The Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Schools Act would provide the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the authority and resources to better protect against poor indoor air quality (IAQ). IAQ is essential for people suffering from asthma.
Notably, the EPA will be required to establish and regularly update a list of significant indoor contaminants and develop health-based, voluntary guidelines to reduce exposure risks to these contaminants. Furthermore, the bill also establishes a regularly updated national assessment of IAQ in schools and childcare facilities and supports development of technical assistance to improve the IAQ conditions of these facilities.
Asthma is a leading cause of missed days of school and also leads to absences from work. The annual economic burden of asthma is estimated to be $115 billion. Improving indoor air quality will help reduce exposure to allergens and airway irritants.
This would help to reduce the burden of this disease and improve the academic outcomes of children with asthma in schools.
