The Vision Research Program (VRP), which is part of the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) is the only dedicated funding source for research on combat-related eye trauma and vision loss. Since 2009, it has driven critical advancements in treatment and rehabilitation efforts to improve care for those who serve our nation. This critical program targets the vision challenges faced by service members and veterans, including traumatic eye injuries and vision complications.
On March 15, funding for the CDMRP was cut by 57%, resulting in the elimination of funding for 23 of the 35 research program areas, including the VRP, for Fiscal Year 2025. Since 2019 Congress has provided $20 million annually for the VRP, recognizing the VRP’s essential role in improving outcomes for those with eye injuries.
This funding cut comes as eye injuries continue to rise. Since 2000, more than 275,000 service members have sustained eye injuries, and more than 490,000 have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries, many with serious vision threatening complications.
It is critical that we continue to advance in our research to protect sight for those who serve our nation. Therefore, it is imperative that Congress hears from you now. Tell your members of Congress to restore and expand funding for the VRP to advance research that protects vision and strengthens military readiness.
