There are 520 RPUs spread across 49 states, territories, and the District of Columbia, enrolling more than 4.9 million students. The term encompasses public four-year institutions that serve the “new majority” of students, enrolling a disproportionately higher number of students of color, from low-income backgrounds, first-generation, Pell Grant recipients, community college transfers, working adults, and veterans compared with other public and private institutions.
In the coming months, the 119th Congress will consider debate on FY26 funding and priorities. It is imperative that they are made aware of and understand the characteristics that differentiate RPUs from larger, well-resourced colleges and universities and consider their collective impact at the state, regional, and local levels.
Your colleges and universities are the engines of social mobility and serve as academic, economic, and cultural centers. We encourage you to respond to this call to action and share relevant information about the sector with the members of your congressional delegation. You may also include specific information about your institution, the characteristics of enrolled students, and the institution's impact on the surrounding community. As FY26 discussions begin, now is the time that a letter, phone call, or invitation to visit your campus will have the most impact.
Act today and let your members of Congress know the vital role your institution plays in your region and how the RPU you lead deeply impacts their state and district!
