Housing Allowances, On Average, Will Climb By More Than 5% In 2022, And A Lot More For Some

Basic Allowance for Housing rates will increase by an average of 5.1% across the board for military members on Jan. 1, according to defense officials. But, as expected, the rates in many of the 56 areas that became eligible Oct. 1 for a temporary extra allowance - due to rapidly escalating housing costs attributable to the pandemic - will be substantially higher than that. The 5.1% represents the largest average increase in BAH since before 2016, when service members saw an average 3.4% bump in their housing allowance.

VA Looking To Move Resources To Help Growing Veteran Numbers In The South

The growing veterans population in the southern region of the United States is forcing the Department of Veterans Affairs to reassess how it manages and expands its health care facilities throughout the country, VA Secretary Denis McDonough said Thursday. As part of a national tour that's taken McDonough to 23 states, he spent Thursday visiting VA hospitals, cemeteries and Vet Centers in Texas. His first stop was the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, which has seen a 15% increase in patients in the past two years. It's now the fastest growing VA facility in the country, he said.

New In 2022: Marine Corps Loosens Its Strict Tattoo Policy

Tattoo sleeves are back for Marines in 2022. Sleeve tattoos were first banned in 2007 after the 2006 Sergeants Major Symposium found Marines of the times to have "excessive" tattoos.  In 2016 the tattoo policy was relaxed slightly, but sleeves were still banned and tattoos visible in physical training uniforms blocked Marines from serving on special duty assignments that come with extra pay and improved promotion ability. Though the 2016 policy allowed an unlimited number of tattoos for enlisted Marines, as long as they were not sleeves, officers and officer candidates were limited to just four visible tattoos in their PT uniform.

And that's the way it is...

In sum, because of new policy recently unveiled, Marines will now be allowed to have tattoos on their face, head, neck, and hands; with certain exceptions. For example, according to the new guideline, chest and back tattoos must be kept below the collarbone and seventh cervical vertebrae, and must be totally covered with a "well fitting crew neck T-shirt with no piece of the tattoo showing."

Moreover, according to market research, veterans appear to be "flocking" to the South and West; particularly Texas, California, Arizona, and Florida. As a result, the VA has begun assessing its resources to see if they may be shifted to better meet demand in those locations. In January, the VA will submit a report to a congressionally appointed commission, which will evaluate the study and make recommendations in 2022.
This could mean some resources are moved from one site to another.

As more information comes to light, our Team will keep you posted.

Lastly, service members can expect a slightly higher BAH rate for the new year. This appears to be a necessary follow up to a temporary increase in the 2021 BAH rates for 56 housing markets announced by the Department of Defense in September of this year.

Our Military and Government Relations Team is interested in hearing about whether your current BAH rate is sufficient to cover your housing costs.

To help us help you, please take some time to complete the 2022 Legislative Platform Survey, which has made LIVE just yesterday. The survey includes a specialized section dedicated to BAH sufficiency, and covers a number of other topics important to our members' quality of life as well. For more information, please see the link in the AFSA On the Hill Section above.

And that's the way it is for Tuesday, December 21, 2021.

Stay tuned for our next M&G-B, where we will continue to keep you in the loop on all things pertinent to the coronavirus, veterans, active-duty members, guards and reservists, and military family members. Stay happy, and stay healthy!
