Every day, living organ donors save lives but too often, they face discrimination from insurance companies and lack job protections when they step up to give the gift of life.
The Living Donor Protection Act would break down barriers to donation by:
- Prohibiting life, disability, and long-term care insurance companies from denying or limiting coverage or charging higher premiums for living organ donors;
- Guaranteeing that living organ donation qualifies as a serious health condition under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), so donors can take the time they need to recover;
- Requiring the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to update educational materials to reflect these protections and promote donation.
