Sarah Debbink Langenkamp was a mother of two boys and a U.S. diplomat who had been evacuated from Ukraine in the summer of 2022 only to be killed weeks later while riding her bike home in Bethesda, Maryland. Her tragic death has sparked calls for change. We do not have to accept the worsening toll of traffic violence in this country.
This bill is named after Sarah in remembrance of her life, inspired by her public service, and with the conviction that we can prevent further unnecessary fatalities on our streets.
This bipartisan bill does not ask for any new money or create any new mandates, it adjusts current policies to:
Bicyclists and pedestrians account for 12% of transportation trips but 20% of fatalities. By passing Sarah’s Safety Act, we can empower communities to make our roads safer for everyone.
Please urge your legislators to sign on to H.R.2011/ S.944 the Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Active Transportation Safety Act, introduced by Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Representative Bryan Steil (R-WI), Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Representative Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) in the House and introduced by Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Senator Bill Haggerty (R-TN), and Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) in the Senate.
